VIDEO: The Good Egg

Jay Height:
The great organizations are those that tackle issues bigger than themselves and partner with others to accomplish it.

Speaker 2:
The purpose of Hatch is to get high quality protein on a sustained basis to people that face food insecurity. Most people don’t know that one egg provides at least half of the protein that you need in a day and some vitamins and nutrients. An egg is an incredibly powerful food that a lot of people don’t really understand.

Speaker 2:
We talk to these egg farmers. We’re talking big producers, but they have generous hearts. The egg farmer donates the eggs to Hatch, so they get a tax write off. What we do is provide logistics and delivery for getting those eggs to various food banks and food pantries.

Speaker 2:
We’re headed the Shepherd Community Center now, one of my favorite drop points. We deliver a thousand dozen eggs each month to Shepherd. It’s a natural fit because Shepherd is trying to alleviate the cycle of poverty on the east side of Indianapolis, and food is a critical component of doing that. Kids learn better if they’re fed, and they learn better if they’re fed with the right kind of foods.

Speaker 2:
People don’t totally understand all Shepherd does. Once I was there, I really understood what a “food desert” meant.

Speaker 2:
It’s not just for a kid, it’s for a family. They give the eggs to the kids as they’re leaving for the day, so they’re actually bringing some food home to mom and dad.

Speaker 2:
It’s a natural fit that Hatch and Shepherd would be a partner in this to make things better for the people on the east side of Indianapolis, seeing those kids getting fed well, getting a good education. If that’s the trajectory that we can start them on in their life, they have a better chance of breaking through that cycle of poverty.
