The Indianapolis Star has written much about the challenge for children around hunger.
Is the answer more food backs?
Is the answer more food stamps?
More free lunch programs?
Yes for the temporary, but what is the answer for the long term? And what are we doing to address the health of the food?
Eating healthy is expensive.
Poverty many times in not a lack of resources, but lack of access. Is there plenty of healthy food in Indiana? The simple answer is yes, so how can we create more access to that food?
One idea we have been doing at Shepherd is backyard gardens for the families we have—more than 80 I believe. Helping folks grow their own food is just one step; we need more ideas, and more access.
