04 Apr Caring for Our Senior Neighbors
I was blessed to have a special grandma who played a key role in my life. She may have been full of her quirks, but she loved me and I her. I spent lots of time with her growing up and, looking back now, I see how she spoiled my brothers and me. And as granny aged, there wasn’t anything we wouldn’t do to help her, giving her the same love and care she gave us.
Granny is now gone, but I still think of her often. Maybe it’s that love for her that drives me when I hear about grandparents who are suffering in our neighborhood. Unfortunately, hunger is a partner to many of our senior adults, and loneliness, a constant companion.
No one should live in a home with holes in the roof. No one should have to decide to eat or purchase his or her medicine. No one should have to eat cat food! Yet, it happens all the time.
Our new Senior Adult Outreach Program is working to stop this, and you can help too! Contact Jill Height at 317-375-0203 or email jillh@shepherdcommunity.org to learn how you can help break the cycle of poverty for our neighbors.
