Shepherd Community is a compassionate ministry that lives, works, and serves in the neighborhoods of the near-eastside of Indianapolis. Our mission is to transform these neighborhoods by breaking the cycle of poverty in the second generation. When little Johnny is born to Susie at a too young age with too little money and too many challenges, we wrap our arms around them both while he grows, giving him the tools to break free and avoid the dire situation his mother had faced.
We have been serving these neighborhoods where hunger is common, education is lacking, and hope is in short supply since 1985. Our success can be measured in many ways: 15,000 meals served per year, 93 families and approximately 250 kids engaged in our core programs, four students headed to college in 2005. But it is the impact on individual lives that tells our story best:

Shepherd is breaking the shackles of poverty with a unique approach called the “Continuum of Care” – a full set of programs that allow us to be continuously engaged in the lives of neighborhood children, teens and their parents. At every age of development, these programs address and balance needs in the physical, emotional, academic and spiritual areas of life that we liken to the four legs of a strong ladder to a better future.
Shepherd Community has been blessed with great success in giving people the “bootstraps” with which to pull themselves up into a better life. Yet all of our programs have waiting lists – there are so many more that we could help. Therefore we seek funding to increase our space, staff, income and number of vehicles. Our goal is to more than double the number of neighbors that we can serve to over 500. Please give us your support and join with our community where the return on investment is measured in changed lives and brighter futures.
